Though Grand Forks is only about a 45 minute commute, there is some employment opportunity in Northwood itself. Several larger employers within the town include Korsmo Brothers Trucking, Farmer’s Union Insurance, Gabriel Construction, Meland Lumber, and Agvise Laboratories, as well as Northwood Public School, Northwood Deaconess Health Center, and the City of Northwood.
Northwood might be small, but it is a full-service city, including department for planning & zoning, fire, public works, and parks and recreation. It also has its own airport and public library. These, in addition to shopping, dining, and recreation, make Northwood a quiet but conjoined community.

Northwood is a city that values the great outdoors, and this is greatly reflected in their parks and recreation. Besides open, green spaces, they also maintain picnic tables and shelters, playgrounds, and athletic fields such as sand volleyball, baseball diamonds, tennis courts, and basketball courts. The town also boasts an outdoor heated swimming pool, a 9-hole golf course, and an outdoor winter ice rink. Its last claim to fame is a self-guided tree identification walking tour. Not bad for a city of only 900 people.
